The Honest Reason Behind Letters From the Field

If I’m being honest – which I typically hold highly as a moral value – I didn’t start our Letters from the Field email for admirable, spiritual reasons. I did it because a business person told me I should. I did it because someone recommended it to grow a steady group of people in the know.

But when I actually sat down to imagine what this could be like, my heart for it grew. It became, not a business scheme but a truly heartfelt letter from someone in the field too.

If you’ve been on the website for any about of browsing time, you’ve probably seen that the business name, Unhidden Treasure Storytelling, is based off of the parable Jesus told, likening the kingdom of heaven to a treasure hidden in a field. I believe that knowing Jesus is a true joy and treasure. I believe that if we just get a glimpse of the enormous beauty of his kingdom, that we will skip away in pure joy.

And with this parable and heart in mind, Letters from the Field was born. I am, after all, just another treasure-seeker like you. Out in the field, excited to be on a journey to know God more richly and deeply. So in a way, I’m writing from the field in my own unearthing and wondering. But also, “letters” harkens back to the days of the early church in which lessons were passed down from apostles and leaders, to others in the body of Christ. I wouldn’t pretend to be an apostle or to suggest my name should be listed among early church leaders. But our faith is built on community - a community that listens and learns and grows thanks to the work of the Holy Spirit through those who have gone before us on the journey.

While we share roles as siblings, I’m happy to pass along to you the things I’ve gleaned along the way, only by the grace and generosity of God. So in a way, I’m sending you letters from the field. The field where I dig deeper, discovering the vastness of God’s incredible Kingdom.

Letters from the Field is designed to unearth an information nugget from the Bible, provide you with something to ponder with your kids, connect the dots in the bigger picture of Scripture, and ultimately see how God reveals something about himself and his kingdom through it. It’s my hope that if you read through these ‘letters,’ you’ll find Jesus to be the real treasure.
